How Prebiotics and Probiotics Support Gut Health in Dogs and Cats

Did you know that up to 70% of your pet’s immune system lives in their gut? When their gut microbiome is balanced, dogs and cats digest well, absorb nutrients efficiently, and stay resilient against illness. When it’s out of balance (a condition called dysbiosis), the signs can show up as loose stools, bloating, low energy, a dull coat, or recurring tummy upsets.

The good news? Prebiotics and probiotics can help restore that balance.

Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria that support digestion and immune function. A 2025 review in Veterinary Sciences (MDPI) confirmed that probiotics can alleviate intestinal inflammation, relieve diarrhoea, and help restore healthy gut microbiota in dogs and cats.

Prebiotics are the fuel that keeps those good bacteria thriving. One of the best-studied prebiotics for pets is psyllium husk, a soluble fibre that regulates bowel movements and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Research shows psyllium improved stool consistency in 93% of cats tested, and outperformed antibiotic treatment for resolving acute diarrhoea in dogs, with lower rates of recurrence (Rudinsky et al., 2022).

Used together, prebiotics and probiotics create a synbiotic effect, each amplifying the benefit of the other.

Salpet Digestion combines the benefits of both prebiotics and probiotics combined with Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon:

  • Tasmanian Salmon powder: digestible protein, gentle on sensitive stomachs
  • Psyllium husk: prebiotic fibre for stool health and microbiome support
  • Probiotic: live bacteria to restore and maintain gut balance

If your pet has persistent digestive issues, we recommend a visit to your vet. As always, gut health is the foundation of overall wellbeing.
